"Housing Navigator Course" @ NYSACRA

"Housing Navigator Course" @ NYSACRA

This week, I started the "Housing Navigator Course" that is being put on jointly by:

In August, I will be deemed a "Housing Navigator" for Developmentally Disabled Adults in New York State, and I expect to use this knowledge to advance the charter and mission of Carousel 51's focus on (RE)Purposing in the Developmentally Disabled market. What that means is an evolving question that will hopefully get clearer under the guidance of John Maltby from WIHD and Carol Napierski of NYSACRA.

I will post some information and thoughts about the Housing Navigator course as it progresses over the summer. For now, I am publishing two guides that may be of use for families in New York State. They are:

The Housing Resource Guide by the Westchester Institute for Human Development, and the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities

This Guide has been written to help people with ASD-I/DD understand the systems and options for housing. It is intended for the use of people with ASD-I/DD, their families and the people who provide their support including Direct Support Professionals and Provider and oversight agencies.

Report to the Housing Task Force by the New York State Association of Community Residential Agencies and the Westchester Institute for Human Development

The NYSACRA-WIHD team created a statewide Housing Task Force which included a wide range of housing and related industry experts, representatives of state and local government, and provider agencies. The Task Force reviewed impediments to increasing housing options in the state and made recommendations to address those impediments. Concurrently NYSACRA and WIHD created the “Housing Navigator curriculum” designed to train I/DD professionals to assist agencies in understanding housing options and to guide people with I/DD and their families through the process of finding a home. The Task Force was a valuable resource in the creation of the curriculum.
